UK to Prohibit use of TikTok on Government Phones over Security Concerns

On Thursday, Britain made the decision to forbid TikTok from being used on official cell phones, joining other Western nations that have already done the same out of fear for their national security.

Due to worries that the Chinese government might obtain user data from the TikTok app, which is controlled by the Beijing-based company ByteDance, undermining Western security interests, the software has come under assault.

Even though TikTok has already been outlawed in the United States, Canada, Belgium, and the European Commission, the National Cyber Security Centre in the United Kingdom is debating whether it should be prohibited on government-issued smartphones.

Minister for the Cabinet Office Oliver Dowden informed the legislature that only third-party apps on a pre-approved list will be accessible on government devices.

He added, “We are also going to forbid TikTok use on government devices, and we will do so with immediate effect.

Personal devices are not included by the prohibition, and there would only be a few exceptions where TikTok is necessary on government devices for operational purposes, according to Dowden.

“Based on unique dangers with government gadgets, this is a proportionate move.”
