Wema Bank Launches Hackaholics 4.0: See How to Apply

Wema has opened the entry page for ALAT Hackaholics 4.0, the bank’s initiative to identify and develop tech talent among college students and early-stage entrepreneurs.

Wema Bank, a 78-year-old financial institution in Nigeria, revealed at the launch of hackholics 4.0 that technology and digital are the way to go because the team there believes that innovation is essential as it plans for the following eight decades.

To do this requires innovation, which inspired the hackaholics 4.0 topic of “Re-Imagine”.

Hence, Wema Bank, the proprietors of ALAT, the leading digital bank in Nigeria, established a strategy to bring the talent pipeline via hacktivists.

Wema Bank has not slowed down since the debut of ALAT in 2017, which engineered experiential banking in Nigeria. Instead, it is bringing innovative solutions to everyday banking customers, particularly financial inclusion.

At the press conference on March 14, 2023, Mr. Tunde Mabawonku, Executive Director, Digital Services, Wema Bank, said: “Hackaholics is at the core of our revolutionary project for entrepreneurs, just as we reinvented experience banking with ALAT. This year, we’re going to have the biggest campus hackathon yet.

“As Wema Bank plans its next eight decades, we must innovate and inspire others to do the same. To develop our organizations into world-class ones, we strive to attract the finest and the brightest, the official said.

In order to expand finance beyond technology, Hackaholics 4.0 is searching for entries with creative ideas in the areas of CivicTech, GovTech, HealthTech, and EntertainmentTech, among others.

According to Mabawonku, the bank would engage 10,000 tech entrepreneurs through the project, generate 5000 solutions, establish 6 pitch centers, and get over one million visitors throughout the campaign.

Olusegun Adeniyi, the bank’s chief digital officer, claimed that by founding the first digital bank and developing exceptional immersive banking with ALAT, the bank has successfully disrupted the digital banking ecosystem.

“We have been operating with an innovative approach. We want to be a hub for fintech and other players, an ecosystem of platforms. The next round of digital unbundling is now underway, according to Adeniyi.

The bank’s Chief Transformation Officer, Mr. Babatunde Mumini, stated that the Hackaholics initiative started in 2019 and has since increased in both breadth and reach.

In addition to using the abilities of young people to spur innovation, the bank, according to Mumini, has been active in developing solutions that address societal challenges.
